Robin Hood

Although not a major figure in Derbyshire, there are some Derbyshire connections, so we have included some interesting facts, stories and myths about this legend.

Time Line of Robin Hood

1189
King Richard (the Lionheart) is King of England.
1190-1250
Legend has it that Robin Hood was active.
1199
King John comes to the throne.
1216
Henry III is King of England.
1217
The Charter of the Forest relaxes Royal Forest laws.
1225
A man called Robert Hood, is recorded as a fugitive in the York Assizes. Could this be the real man?
1261-1262
William Robehod, fugitive, is recorded in the King's Rememberances Memoranda Roll, perhaps proving to be the earliest evidence of the known legend.
1377
A poem known as Piers Plowman makes reference to the Legend of Robin Hood.
1450
The date of the first known surviving written versions of the oral legend.
1993
Exciting discovery of the Foresters Manuscript (c1670) containing 21 ballads.
1997
First meeting of the International Conference on Robin Hood Studies in USA.
1999
Second meeting of the international conference at Nottingham.
2001
The third biennial international conference at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.
